The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Monday it had established a link between Chinese drywall and corrosion of wiring and plumbing components.
The agency has received 2,091 complaints about Chinese drywall products from 32 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
The complaints have included noxious smells and corrosion of copper pipes and wiring.
The commission said the study of 51 homes in Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Virginia and Mississippi found "a strong association between the problem drywall, the hydrogen sulfide level in homes with that drywall and corrosion in those homes," The Miami Herald reported.
The commission is continuing to study the health risks involved. Complaints include a sulfur-like smell and trouble breathing, the newspaper said.
